Buzz in practice: our assessment

Local transcription changes where the work happens

Buzz documents offline transcription on your computer, with local audio/video input and text or subtitle-file exports. In the scoped workflow reviewed here, the application and a recognition model are installed before a local file is processed.

Our assessment: this is a materially different option from a hosted transcriber when keeping the recording on your own machine is a requirement. It shifts setup and compute work to the user. A free software licence does not remove the time needed to install the application, obtain a model, process the audio and correct the resulting transcript.

The selected backend determines the processing boundary

Buzz documents model and backend choices, including optional API settings. A local-file workflow with a local model is therefore a specific configuration, not a promise that every operation available inside the application is offline.

For a local-only project, identify the selected backend before importing material and obtain required model files in advance. Keep project files out of unintended shared folders if the recording is sensitive. Those operational choices are separate from the software’s recognition capability. We do not equate an offline workflow with a general security certification or extend it to external API processing.

Judge the setup using your own recording workload

A local model uses the resources available on the computer doing the work. The practical comparison is therefore not just a software name but a combination of application, model, hardware and recording. A setup that is convenient for occasional short clips may be less convenient for hours of recurring material.

Use a representative sample and record the elapsed processing time alongside correction effort. Preserve the model choice so a later comparison is reproducible. For subtitle delivery, inspect timing as well as words. This gives you a useful selection method without pretending that our documentation review has measured speed or accuracy on your computer.
